BIMI Explained: Why Your Logo Isn't in Gmail Yet

What BIMI Actually Does

BIMI (Brand Indicators for Message Identification) lets your verified logo show up as the avatar next to your emails in supporting inboxes — Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, and increasingly Apple Mail. It's a trust signal, not a spam filter bypass: recipients recognize your brand before they open the message, which measurably helps open rates and makes lookalike phishing harder to pull off convincingly.

Most teams hear about BIMI, publish one DNS record, and are confused when nothing changes in Gmail. That's because BIMI isn't a standalone feature — it's a reward layered on top of email authentication you have to already have working.

The Prerequisites Nobody Mentions

DMARC at Quarantine or Reject, Not None

This is the requirement that trips up the most senders. A BIMI record only takes effect once your domain enforces DMARC at p=quarantine or p=reject — not the default p=none monitoring-only policy most domains start with. Mailbox providers treat enforcement as proof you're serious about blocking spoofed mail before they'll display your logo next to it.

A Verified Mark Certificate (or Common Mark Certificate)

Gmail requires a certificate from an approved certificate authority — DigiCert or Entrust — binding your logo to your registered trademark. This is called a Verified Mark Certificate (VMC), and it typically costs several hundred dollars a year. In late 2024, Google expanded support to Common Mark Certificates (CMCs), which don't require a registered trademark, opening BIMI up to brands that never trademarked their logo — though a VMC is still what earns Gmail's blue checkmark next to the sender name.

Your logo has to be a specific SVG profile (SVG Tiny 1.2, Portable/Secure), not a PNG or a regular SVG export from your design tool. Most brands need a designer or a BIMI-specific conversion service to produce a compliant file.

Why Most Companies Get Stuck at p=none

Moving DMARC from monitoring to enforcement means you have to be confident that every message failing SPF or DKIM really is illegitimate — because at p=reject, those messages get dropped. Teams get stuck at p=none indefinitely because they can't tell the difference between "this failure is a spoofed phishing attempt" and "this failure is noise from a misconfigured legitimate sender." Bounce and complaint noise from a dirty recipient list makes that read even harder: high bounce rates and spam complaints degrade the reputation signals mailbox providers use to evaluate your domain overall, which makes providers more conservative about trusting your enforcement in the first place.

In other words, a domain that already has bounce rates under control and a validated sending list has an easier, faster path to safe DMARC enforcement — and therefore to BIMI — than one still guessing which failures are safe to ignore.

Where List Hygiene Actually Fits

  3. Clean your sending list so bounce and complaint rates stop masking real authentication problems in those reports.
  4. Move DMARC to p=quarantine, then p=reject once reports are clean.

  6. Publish the BIMI DNS record pointing to your logo and certificate.

Is It Worth the Trouble?

For a brand sending real volume to consumer inboxes — newsletters, receipts, marketing campaigns — yes.
